Kanjeng Sri Sultan Hamengku Buwono VI

Hamengkubuwono VI (19 Agustus 1821 – 20 Juli 1877) adalah adik dari Hamengkubuwono V. Hamengkubuwono VI semula bernama Pangeran Adipati Mangkubumi. Kedekatannya dengan Belanda membuatnya mendapat pangkat Letnan Kolonel pada tahun 1839 dan Kolonel pada tahun 1847 dari Belanda. 

Perkawinannya dengan putri Solo pada tahun 1848 yaitu kemenakan Susuhunan Pakubuwono V atau cucu Pakubuwono IV dari garwa ampeyan (selir) merupakan catatan sejarah bagi terjalinnya kembali hubungan antara Kasunanan Surakarta dan Kesultanan Yogyakarta yang sejak perjanjian Gianti (1755) sering terjadi pertikaian antara kedua belah pihak. 

 Pada masa pemerintahannya terjadi gempa bumi yang besar. gempa ini meruntuhkan sebagian besar Istana Air Taman Sari, Tugu Golong Gilig, Masjid Gedhe (Masjid Kerajaan), Loji Kecil (sekarang Istana Kepresidenan “Gedung Agung” Yogyakarta dan beberapa bangunan lainnya
